Maths
At Woodbury C of E Primary School, we recognise the importance of Maths in every aspect of daily life.
Therefore, our aim is for the children to become confident problem solvers, and equip them with the tools that they will need in their future lives. We ensure reasoning and problem solving are key elements which are interwoven into maths lessons throughout the year groups and stages of calculation. Children are given a variety of rich problems to increase their fluency and understanding at a particular stage. We endeavour to ensure that the children have regular opportunities to show their depth of understanding through investigation style problems throughout each unit to allow them to reason, conjecture, generalise and explain their learning through journaling. This allows them to tackle routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions. Becoming fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics is a key aspect in children’s understanding. Therefore, fluency is explicitly taught and revised regularly through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
